LiDAR scanners are usually expensive pieces of equipment, used in industries such as surveying and GIS to capture spaces, buildings and objects in 3D. I was interested in using laser scanning and point clouds for my own practice but could not afford to buy one. I began making a low cost DIY LiDAR point cloud scanner at home using readily available components and hand tools.
