4. DIY LiDAR

The aim of surveying is to capture the real situation “outside” as reliably as possible and then transfer it to maps, plans and other outputs”

LiDAR scanners are usually expensive pieces of equipment, used in industries such as surveying and GIS to capture spaces, buildings and objects in 3D. I was interested in using laser scanning and point clouds for my own practice but could not afford to buy one. I began making a low cost DIY LiDAR point cloud scanner at home using readily available components and hand tool, thus disrupting the heirarchies and barriers of surveying as a discipline and knowledge making practice.
